Love Bubble Summer Updates 2011!

Recognition! That's what makes us artists and family bands keep doing our thing. The "Room 28" music video had some awesome web recognition in June:

On April 17, 2011, our song, "The Love Bubble" was featured on the podcast, Kindiecast with Tor Hyams!

"Supertalents" (off our album, the Love Bubble) featuring Gregory Brown, will be featured in the U.S. Department of State's "Sing Out Loud: Modern American Rhythms CD." The CD will be released throughout the world to help teach English through song. More on this later when the CD has its official release (date to be determined, but hopefully by the end of the summer.)

Also stay tuned for more updates on the 3d Supertalents music video, still currently in post-production phase.

June 11 & 12, Ava and I with honorary Chocolate Chip Hula Hooper, Jessi-Fresh, rocked out the Harmony Fest's Kids Zone in Santa Rosa. For more pics click here. You can say we officially opened up for the Flaming Lips and Primus.

Also, Grandma Cookie and I got to rock out as Evil Sandwiches with magical super friends the Ukulady, Gabby La La, Don Black, and Emily Butterfly. How cool is that?

Met some great peeps in the Kindie scene over the past few months. At Kindiefest in NYC this May, I met Dan Zanes and 23 Skidoo. Met a ton of other ubertalents---too many to name!

Mid June, here in LA, there was a "So Cal Kindie Cook Out" at David Tobocman's pad for a little BBQ campfire jam session organized by NYC kindie writer, Jeff Bogle. Got to jam out with David, the Pop Ups, Birdie Mendoza, and Rhythm Child! Around the fire, we roasted smores and played some Bob--Dylan and Marley, Beatles, Woody Guthrie, Violent Femmes, and even the Pixies. Fun times indeed!

Coming up, we have a couple shows with the TNP crowd over in Little Tokyo! July 19th, we're rocking TNP and will be debuting our new song, "Happy Place." Here's the info. Also, August 6th, TNP presents the J-Town Summer Sessions. We will be recording this performance and it will feature the Ukulady's Ukulad on banjo and mandolin!

The song features all 28 students of the classroom as well as Mr. V on the M-I-C. Both the song and video were crafted together as a class with Mr. Valdez and Mista Cookie Jar every Tuesday in the 2010 to 11 school year.

It goes without saying, that I am just so incredibly over-the-top proud of the students of Room 28. Jenna, Ava Flava's mom, and I have been blessed to be able to work with these kids each Tuesday this entire year. It started as something very casual and, with the help of their teacher, Mr. Valdez, and support from the school community, it’s turned into this grand music video production. I'd like to give a very big special thanks to Mr. V for his enthusiasm and dedication to the project. He was as much a part of the process as these kids were. I’d also like to thank Mr V as the master 4th grade teacher that he is, bringing his unique wisdom to these kids, putting his heart into helping them find their true potential. As an artist, the chemistry between Mr Valdez and his students has been my inspiration throughout the whole year. And as this school year marvelously comes to a close, its sad to let it go. This is why Jenna and I have put so much time and energy into this project--we never want to forget the spirit of Room 28. Its AWESOME. Its magical. Its a rare bond this classroom has--the way they get along with each other, their humor, the way they collectively help each other grow. If you were fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the inner workings of this classroom (any room parents out there reading this?! lol), you would have seen it serves as a visceral example of unity, how its engine runs, how it gets down from day to day. Jenna and I were fortunate enough to witness it as these kids do, blessed to have been able to document it weekly. It was our mission to transform this spirit into song---hip hop--as chosen by the kids, and a music video so that their anthem will live on forever.

We have also created a “Behind the Scenes” 13 minute mini-documentary. We wanted to take a closer, slower look at how these kids in fact “roll.” The music video you can say was set to nitro to keep up with these kids so full of adrenaline. With the Behind the Scenes video, we've attempted to break the music video down and the meaning of room 28 at a pace for all to follow so you too can catch in detail the fast, ever-moving spirit behind Mr. Valdez’s class.

This is a behind the scenes look at the making of the music video, "Room 28 (That's How We Roll)." Directed by LA kids music composer and room-parent, Mista Cookie Jar, this 13 minute mini-documentary takes a closer look at the classroom spirit of the 4th grade students of Room 28 and their beloved teacher, Mr. Valdez. The video breaks down the meaning of the classroom anthem, "Room 28," (as composed by Room 28 & Mista Cookie Jar), the Room 28 recording & creative process, the quirks of Mr. Valdez's classroom (Valdez Bucks, the Mobi Tablet, disco parties & more), and hilarious yet touching moments between Mr. Valdez & his kids. This Friday, we premiered our music video, “Room 28 (That’s How We Roll),” to the friends and family of the students of Room 28. I have video of the event, it's being edited so stay tuned. So in the meantime, here's a recap. It was a festive gala held in the school auditorium, the Room 28 music video and its behind-the-scenes counterpart premiered on the school’s giant projection screen. One of the parents even contributed by letting us use their “red carpet” and “velvet ropes” for the event. The kids were dressed to impress, as if attending the Grammy’s. Mr. Valdez, the kids teacher and star of “Room 28,” was the host of the event. He called their names out one by one as they stepped out along the red carpet, the kids waving to the crowd, some throwing up a peace sign as parents and family were taking pictures like paparazzi.

A handful of the children presented speeches about their experience making the video, which was quite touching to say the least. And when we presented the 2 videos to the classroom, man o man....2 of the proudest moments of my life, I must say! The kids hadn't seen the final version of the music video. Definitely a thrill to see their reaction at the new additions! With the exception of Ava Flava's mom, Jenna, NO ONE of the 150 plus attendees in the auditorium including Mr. Valdez had seen the 13 minute long Behind the Scenes video. This was the highlight of the night for me! It explains the meaning behind much of the wordplay of the song and the idiosyncrasies of Mr. Valdez's classroom. One of the best parts about it for me was some of the candid interviews I conducted with the kids, their interactions and their genuine love for their classroom and teacher, Mr. Valdez. Pretty awesome to show Mr. Valdez and the students that stuff, I tell ya. Bittersweet, tears and laughter. I love it. Prettyyyy aweeessooommmeee!!

"Welcome to day four of music week. Today I have the pleasure of introducing the funkadelic folks from Mista Cookie Jar and the Chocolate Chips. The first time I laid eyes on C J Pizarro {aka Mista Cookie Jar}, I had this immediate feeling of fondness. I think it’s partly due to his eccentric charm and partly because his psychedelic style reminds me of deee-lite’s album World Clique. Rad!

Mista Cookie Jar’s debut album is called The Love Bubble and it features a collection of songs that fuse styles from hip hop to synth-pop, with a hint of reggae on the side. According to Mista Cookie Jar “Each song is a bubble full of heart – musically and lyrically rooted in wonder and wisdom so as to connect to all bubbles, respecting all cultures, past, present and future”… an inspiring and uplifting concept.

I must say that I’ve become a little bit addicted to title track ‘The Love Bubble’ which is just as enjoyable for adults as it is for kidlets. Other cool tracks on the album that Mums and Dads will love include ‘Magic World’ and ‘Supertalents’. As far as the little people review goes, favourites include ‘Joey the Dogg’ and ‘Problemz’ which are both super fun for busting out some road trip sing-a-longs or Friday afternoon dance-a-thons. Filmed at Loveship Bubbletron (the Chocolate Chips backyard) on a High-8 video camcorder, in front of a homemade green screen, Joey the Dogg features 6 year old, Lucas! as Joey the Dogg. The character was invented when Lucas was 4 in a game of "pretend" and has since inspired this Chocolate Chip anthem. Joey's "a little puppy" with a "really big heart" who can "bark AND talk." The video is Mista Cookie Jar's directorial debut featuring original animation and costume design from the Love Bubble family. I scored a new gig this past week with Star Education as part of their WIM program...that's Wonder Imagination and Magic! Quite Love Bubblily, eh? Each week I will be performing at a different LA school. So far I've performed at Gardner Street Elementary (Michael Jackson's elementary school) and Westwood Charter. Excited to be on the Star team and have the opportunity to spread the Love Bubble in schools in the LA area!

"Supertalents" Video Shoot

This past weekend Mista Cookie Jar & the Chocolate Chips team began production of the music video for our song Supertalents off the our album, the Love bubble. The song features my homie, Gregory Brown of our acoustic duo, the Gypsy Twins. Our friends, Chris and Stacy of Market Street Productions are directing and producing the video--and an impressive job they are doing! Having worked with them for our video, Magic World, we just know Supertalents will be just as magical. Chris is using a 3d video camera that came out last week and from what I've heard, this will be the very first 3d music video with this camera! The setting of the video will be in a galactic arcade game come to life. The Chocolate Chips (Ava and Lucas) will be sucked into the video game where they meet Greg and I, their astro tour guides so to speak. Many green screen shots, including some of Greg and I flying on harnesses. We also filmed some shots at Vasquez Rocks, where many sci-fi Hollywood flicks (like Star Trek) were filmed. Our friend Javarnanda is down to rock some 8 bit animation for this one!

Also featured are some young dancers from Michael Jackson's Elementary School (!), Gardner Street Elementary, Shania, Ashanti, & Jaylan. Many thanks to these supertalented kids and their mom's for coming through. Shania & Ashanti's mother, V, is actually a DOPE Puerto Rican rapper...hip hop and reggeaton! Keep your eyes out for this rising star.

Stay tuned for the release date...we're shooting for around this Christmas season!

Synchronicity & the Hella Hipster Hoedown # 9!

Friday's show was ripe with synchronicity! Where Lucas Ave and Pizarro St. meet was the location of our show, the Perhspace Gallery. Lucas is the name of our boy, my girlfriend's son aka Joey the Dogg in our crew, the Chocolate Chips. Pizarro is my last name...love these little signs to keep ya going. Coincidence, I think not. Though these things happen often in the Love Bubble!

Elaine Layabout, whom I met at our last show at Grumpa's Merchants Mart in Venice, orgainized the whole event. I gave Elaine a CD and she loved it so she booked us this gig. Turns out we're also both huge Herzog fans. Fitting to have the spirit of Herzog in the air---his film career seems to be driven by bizarre synchronicity.

The venue was looming with hella happenin hipsters of the urban and hoedown persuasion. An honor to play with Elaine and the Layabouts, the Cobra Lillies, and Blackbird Raum. Hope to perform many more shows with these guys! Also turns out Zack, the accordionist of Blackbird Raum is old San Franscisco friends with Matthue Roth of By Ur Side and Circles in the Love Bubble. Blackbird Raum was wildly amazing, no mics! Back-home instruments like washboards, broomstick bass, banjo's, mandolin, etc...but in the spirit of gypsy punks! radness.

The Cobra Lillies were amazingly and funly superb as well! A huge group! like 10 or more instrumentalists. They were magical--poetry, personalities, dancing and a bit of brawling in display for all-- all in the spirit of Rock N Roll.

As for our show, those kids, the Chocolate Chips rocked it! Ava Flava and Mikyla had their best performance and brought so much energy showing off their chops. Even Lucas mustered up the energy to dazzle the audience with some improvised hoedown breakdancing. Words cannot describe his cuteness. And the Choco Chips all together have such overwhelming cute energy I have but the loveliest memory of the night. Even the banjo player/singer of Blackbird Raum called our act, Kidsploitation (that's in a good way). We also tried out our new Bubble Machine from Grumpa (the kids grandaddy). It totally kept chugging through out the whole show and left a nice bubbly drool on the floor which Ava and I slipped on in our love bubblity focus. It was grand!

Lastly, a big up to Jane Chen, who joined us as a member of the Chocolate Chips. She kept the kids organized and whipped into love bubblily shape on stage, doing little miming games and dancing funness. Mind you she's a CLOWN. An extremely talented clown of the old skool/classical sense--not the party clown/slipknot variety. Think Fellini's "La Strada" or even Harpo Marx. She's also a trained actress and has a 2 woman show with her mother called, Chinese Clown Cabaret. It received rave reviews and by the looks of the website and all the videos I've seen about it, the show seems fantastic. Check it out...its a definite MUST on my list.

One PS for Black Sparrow Press, who we didn't catch. The kids were way too sleepy and starting to fade in the Blackbird Raum melee. It was time to get these kids to bed! But my apologies for missing yallz show!

I'm an activity leader/strolling minstrel at the hospital and Aunt Carol is a resident whom I have become good friends with over the past few years. She has met the kids many times during our visits to the hospital and has become a real "aunt" figure to us. Charlie Wilmoth at Goldstar Hospital

Charlie Wilmoth, lead singer/songwriter of the incredible West Virginia band, Fox Japan, came to the hospital today to perform with me for the kind folks of Goldstar. It was quite a hootenanny! Charlie's a brilliant lyricist/songwriter as well as performer. If u haven't checked out his band, do so! We share a common bond having both grown up in the sheltered suburb life of the Ohio Valley. Valley boys thru and thru! I had my guitar and sax and he brought his guitar and viola. We sang originals and countless covers. As always, Betty Jo (pictured below) kept the beat going with her maraca. I'm really amazed by his song, '91 (which you can listen to and purchase on the Fox Japan myspace page here.) A sentimental song for me, having grown up that same year in the same city, Wheeling, WV in which the song makes reference to. With specific references to that particular time and place, the lyrics work like hip hop while remaining in the ballad form. The song brilliantly is poetic, serious, funny, and not overly sentimental. Charlie got to meet my 2 adopted mothers of the hospital, Victoria and Angel (pic of Angel below to the right). They both thought very highly of the man and his music. They also thought him quite an attractive young lad. Later that day, we went with my girlfriend Jenna to see Michael Moore's Capitalism: a Love Story. That movie ruled. Quite a thought provoking and musically rich day. Thank you, Charlie!

A Mista Cookie Jar Documentary....?!

Nick J Palmer, my friend and fellow colleague, is making a doc about me and my work as a "Strolling Minstrel" at the convalescent hospital I work at in Santa Monica. We've been filming for the past few months and have much excitement and "ecstatic truths" on tape! Hooooty whooo! I'm fortunate someone is capturing some of the stories of my friends at this home away from home. Despite the dreary vibes inherent in hospital life, we have a lot of fun and make a lot of magic happen. There's LOOOVE among residents. And such characters! Aunt Carol being one of them! Also, my girlfriend's mother/my adopted mother, Victoria--she came up with the whole idea of the Love Bubble! I can't go on without mentioning my second adopted mother and Soul Coach, Miss Angel Crain (first pic above). She has kept me in check with life and quality of recordings/performances.

It's a true honor to be working with Nick and his cinematographer, the talented, Amanda Treyz (check out her work on the amazing film, Acholiland, a short film about refugees and U.N. workers in Northern Uganda). We've captured many concerts with the residents, interviews, karaoke fun, music video shoots, Mista Cookie Jar concerts, and much much more. Sometimes it feels like my own reality TV show, talk about awkward. ; ) Nick was aiming for a short documentary in the beginning, but it may be turning into something bigger perhaps....stay tuned!

The show (9-19-09) was a lot of fun! I got to meet the one and only, Gabby La La (pic to prove it above)! I read about her online trying to find kickass kids acts. Found her in the Kidzone at Michael Franti's Power to the Peaceful Festival website. Her album, Be Careful What You Wish For... was produced and engineered by the one and only, Les Claypool (one of my childhood heros!) Les Claypool best describes her, "Besides being an accomplished Sitar player, Gabby La La utilizes Toy Piano, Ukulele, Theremin, Accordion and Butterfly-Guitar while tap dancing and singing like Glinda the Good Witch from the Wizard of OZ. She is a wonderful inspiration and I whole heartedly support her nomination for Secretary of State." The album was released on Prawn Song Records--the label is associated with many of my old favorites in the 90's such as Sausage, M.I.R.V., and the Charlie Hunter Trio (not to mention the Primus records!). Check out her album, its brilliant! The Ukulady along with the Ukulad were super fun too. They wore cute matching outfits from Roswell and covered, "She'll Make Me Happy" from Muppets take Manhattan. Check out the Ukulady's album, Banned From Canters! (she apparently did get banned for real!) The album is badass and touching at once: Comedy & heart-on-a-sleeve songs! Aunt Carol Video Shoot

On August 15th, 2009, at Aunt Carol's hospital, Goldstar (formerly known as Oceanview), we completed the music video shoot for the song Aunt Carol off the Love Bubble. Loads of fun! Aunt Carol had on a bright pretty dress and I painted her nails rainbow with glitter. We had a good handful of kids show up to dance, sing and be cute. Patients of the hospital showed up in wheelchairs and birthday party hats to party along with us. A fake band jammed along with the music. Edvardo, a young Mexican bass guitar prodigy who I met at a Church's Chicken drive thru a few months ago was on a pink kids sized electric guitar. Felipe, another prodigiously talented youngster who just graduated high school fake played his electric guitar and will be featured in the video doing a charming Elvis, "Thank you very much." Little Lucas rocked it on the toddler drums. Bubbles were everywhere thanks to my trusty bubble machines I bought at Big Lots. Angel, my adopted mother and president of the residents of the hospital, was shooting kids with her bubble gun. We got glitter all over the cake which made for a great video shot but an unedible dessert. Thad Reid, the director of the video, captured it all while Nick J Palmer, captured Thad capturing it. (Nick is making a documentary about my work as an strolling minstrel/activity leader at the hospital which is a whole other blog entry all together!) Robin came with Little Miss Mikyla while Jessica brought hula hoops and made Carol an amazing pirate patch with flowers and designs painted and glittered all over. Jenna was rockin it in a wrestler's mask while Avaroni led the kids around dancing in beautiful figure 8's around the residents. Big up to our friend Marisol and her friends for coming through with some beautifully delightful children! The spirit of the song was in the air and I've got a good feeling Thad got it all on his camera! The only thing missing was Jose Gonzales whose Richie Valens/Johnny Cash-esque prescense is featured on the song. Shucks, wish he could've made it. August 18, 2009 Mista Cookie Jar and the Chocolate Chips at Tuesday Night Cafe. Fun show! Everyone loved the kids. The gang was actually called Da Big Seeds that night but soon after we changed the name to the cuter and catchier Chocolate Chips. This gang includes Ava aka Ava Flava/Avaroni, Lucas aka Joey the Dogg, Miss Mikyla, and Venice Carly. They did a great job! The kind folks at TNC gave the kids each their own mic. Lucas was really cute with his arfs during Joey the Dogg. Ava nailed her raps and all her cues. Mikyla fashionably came in midset with a stunning entrance. They gave her a mic and she was good to go! Then the girls did some spontaneous synchronized dancing. All the while, Carly was doin her thang dancin lookin stylish and cool. We were all strangely amped and tired at once--the previous two nights we were making a video for Magic World at Carly's place til the wee hours of the morning. So we were exhausted but we had that Love Bubble synergy thang goin on. Farmer John aka Johneric gave us a warm and generous introduction. And the Tuesday Night folks always give out good vibes. ; ) We had my friend NIck J Palmer who is making a documentary about me came out to film it. Hopefully we'll get some of that footage for youtube soon. Big thanks to Alex (Nick's twin bro) for taking pictures! "Mista Cookie Jar Presents: The Love Bubble" is a musical representation of the utopic concept, the Love Bubble. In late 2008, Mista Cookie Jar concieved the idea along with his girlfriend, Jenna, her children, and their grandmother. The Bubble itself is an imaginary forcefield that protects and guides the inner-child. It is strengthened by the collective love in a village. As a child gives back that love, the bubble grows. The variety of genres (from Hip Hop to Synth-Pop to Bluegrass) and musical guests (from Vermont to Louisiana to Syria, ages 5 to 65) reflect the bubble's inclusive spirit. Each song is a bubble full of heart--musically and lyrically rooted in wonder and wisdom so as to connect to all bubbles, respecting all cultures, past, present and future. Every song reflects a different aspect of the Bubble. While songs like World to Explore and Magic World explore the imagination and innocence of childhood, songs such as Aunt Carol and Joey the Dogg investigate the quirky characters that exist in the Love Bubble. In the spirit of Bob Marley and the Beatles, all songs of the Bubble are bound together by the perrenial concept of love.

Who is Mista Cookie Jar?

C.J. "Mista Cookie Jar" Pizarro (born July 22, 1980) is a Filipino-West Virginian music producer/poet/filmmaker/MC involved in such collaborations as Santa Inferno, Eagle Quest, Chibi Vision, the Philistines, and most recently, Soul Phuziomati and the Gypsy Twins. While earning his BA in English from George Washington University in 2002 and his MFA in Poetry/Creative Writing from Otis College in LA, he has produced and co-produced over 10 music albums since 1997, numerous films/short films and is the author of a book of poetry entitled, "Genesis of a Mongoloid Messiah." Mista Cookie Jar has shared the stage alongside acts such as Very Be Careful, the N.O.M.A.D.S, Head-Roc and the War Machine, Beau Sia, Busdriver, Matthue Roth, and Smokey Miles among countless others. His music was featured on Henry Rollins' radio show, Harmony in My Head. He has provided musical scores for recent films including Patrick Epino's "Mr. Sadman" (2008) and Nick J. Palmer's "Dockweiler" (2008). In the fall of 2009, Mista Cookie Jar composed a campaign song, "Soul Fly," for Rev. Jerry Grimes, a candidate for U.S. Congress for the 1st district of North Carolina. Currently Mista Cookie Jar associates with Mark Mothersbaugh's company, Mutato Muzika, providing TV ad compositions for companies such as Best Buy, Hefty, and Johnson and Johnson. He also performs full-time as a Strolling Minstrel/Activity Leader at Goldstar Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Santa Monica, CA. While remaining active in the Los Angeles activist and indie music communities, he performs a more family oriented musical act regularly at LA schools, camps, and hospitals. Nick J. Palmer is currently filming a short documentary about Mista Cookie Jar's work as a strolling minstrel for the sick and the elderly.
